THE PREPARATION OF THE PENTAGONAL PYRAMIDAL CARBORANE, 2,3,4,5-C4B2H6.

Abstract

The pentagonal pyramidal carborane, 2,3,4,5,-C4B2H6, was prepared from 1,2-tetramethylenediborane(6). The conversion was accomplished at 550C using a high-vacuum system which permits a rapid flow of reactant through the hot zone at low pressures. The evidence used to establish the formula and structure of 2,3,4,5,-tetracarba-nido-hexaborane(6) include (a) a mass spectrum cutoff at m/e = 76, (b) two doublets of equal area in the 11B nmr, (c) two singlets and two quartets in the 1H nmr which can be assigned to the two C-H and two kinds of B-H groups, respectively, and (d) the presence of C-H and B-H stretching frequencies in the infrared and the absence of B-H-B bridge frequencies.
