REVIEW OF HOSPITAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Abstract

A modern metropolitan hospital, perhaps more than any other social institution, is dependent upon rapid and accurate information flow. Because, in the practice of modern medicine, correct information at the right time can be vital to save a life or prevent a catastrophe, the hospital is increasingly vulnerable to failures in the information set. Although the amount of information is burgeoning in parallel with medical-science research, interest in reliable, automated medical-information processing has only recently begun to grow. The Paper reviews the current status in this country of automated HIS, with particular emphasis on the involvement of the U. S. Public Health Service in the development and deployment of these systems.
