BEND STRENGTH OF ARC-MELTED TiC-C ALLOYS.

Abstract

The bend strengths of arc-melted TiC-C alloys were determined in 3-point loading as a function of carbon content and compared with the bend strengths of ZrC-C alloys. Their nearly identical behavior when compared on a microstructural basis allowed interpretation based on similar microstructural features. By analogy to features found in more conventional ceramics, it was postulated that the arc-melted alloys may provide an insight into the behavior of a more general class of ceramic materials.
