A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO NONLINEAR ESTIMATION,
Abstract
One of the main purposes of the report is to take a new look, in as general terms as possible, at the requirements of many aerospace estimation problems in order to assess the value of many theoretically derived estimation algorithms for these applications. The discussion indicates some of the difficulties in applying results from probabilistic estimation to this class of problems. This provides a background of some of the factors which led to consideration of generalized least squares estimation (GLSE). The approach is discussed and is found to give a systematic approach to nonlinear estimation which provides an answer to some of the difficulties of probabilistic estimation and which lends a good deal of insight into practical estimation.
