STATUS REPORT ON EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS AND MEASUREMENTS ON THE ARL Q-DEVICE,

Abstract

The behavior of the ARL Q-device is described for various operational conditions. The reported experiments do not constitute completed studies but are rather exploratory in nature and obtained results are to be considered as starting points for future investigations. Although the data so far measured do not suffice for a good quantitative description, an attempt has been made throughout the report to bring a logical and consistent causality into the observed data. In this way one can classify three distinct oscillatory states from the experimental observations made on the Q-device: First, 'the clean interger harmonic frequency state'. Second, 'the discrete frequency mode-coupling state'. Third, 'the turbulent mixing state'. These states are described in as much detail as available measurements at this time permit. (Author)
