THE SOLUTION CHEMISTRY OF POLYHEDRAL BORON HYDRIDE IONS.

Abstract

The investigation was concerned with the properties of polyhedral boranes. The enthalpy, entropy and free energy of formation of B10H10(2-) were determined. The diamagnetic susceptibilities and polarizabilities of a series of polyhedral boranes and corresponding halides were measured. New syntheses of B20H19(3-) and of chlorinated and brominated B10-compounds with fewer than seven halogens were developed. Reactions of B10H10(2-) with: CuCl2, CuBr2, CuF2, FeCl3, Fe(NO3)3, KMNO4, K2Cr2O7, KIO3, KCLO3, KBrO3, and Ha4XeO6, were explored and the products characterized. The studies were done in aqueous and non-aqueous media. Free radical intermediates in the oxidation reactions were identified. (Author)
