WORD RECALL AND CLUSTERING AS A FUNCTION OF DELAY INTERVAL, LIST TYPE AND SORTING TECHNIQUE

Abstract

The purpose of the experiment was to test the hypothesis that the amount recalled and clustering, in the occurrence of related words in strings of two or more, are inversely related to the delayed recall interval. The results were interpreted as supporting Miller's coding hypothesis about superordinate and subordinate labels. The nature of the categorization was not found to be exclusively organizational or associational. A relationship between organization and amount recalled was substantiated.
