AN ANALYSIS OF INTRINSIC DIFFUSION AND INTERDIFFUSION IN SINGLE PHASE BINARY DIFFUSION COUPLES,

Abstract

The Matano method and Darken method for deducing interdiffusion coefficients and intrinsic diffusion coefficients are reexamined. It is shown that the coordinate system with the Matano interface as origin is inconsistent with Boltzmann's analysis. An alternative coordinate system with origin at the weld interface is proposed and is used to rederive the formulas for interdiffusion coefficients and intrinsic diffusion coefficients in terms of marker displacements and concentration profile data. The new formula for the interdiffusion coefficient has not been pointed out previously but the formulas deduced for the intrinsic diffusion coefficients are identical with results deduced independently by Heumann.
