ROCKETSONDE TEMPERATURE ERRORS.

Abstract

Occasionally rocketsonde flights have yielded significantly warmer temperature profiles than the conjunctive radiosondes in the overlap altitude region of 25 to 30 kilometers. In addition, near-sinusoidal oscillations in the rocketsonde temperature data have been found for many of these soundings. An analysis of a series of flights, conducted at Point Mugu, California, has indicated that both of these phenomena are most likely due to solar radiation effects upon the thin-film thermistor mounts currently used with the rocketsondes. The results of this analysis indicate that both of these anomalies in the temperature data occur when the thermistor sensor is intimately connected--both mechanically and thermally--to the thin-film mounting structure. An additional cause of the warm bias appears to be instrument infrared radiation of the film mount. Simple and inexpensive modifications to the Datasonde film loop thermistor mount are proposed to eliminate this bias effect, and to eliminate the sinusoidal temperature oscillations. (Author)
