CONDITION DOMAINS IN SOLID MIXED CONDUCTORS AND ELECTROLYTIC DOMAIN OF CALCIA STABILIZED ZIRCONIA.

Abstract

Recent experimental investigations of mixed conduction in CSZ (Zr0.85Ca0.15O1.85) have been assessed to establish the electrolytic domain of this oxide solid electrolyte. The electrolyte domain is bounded with straight line segments on log P(O2) vs 1/T plots. This linearity is caused by the known functional dependence of the partial ionic and electronic conductivities in solid electrolytes and is useful for assessing electrolytic properties of mixed conductors in log P(O2), 1/T regions where direct measurements have not yet been made. A number of experimental methods for establishing domain boundaries are suggested, and the methods and interpretation of the corresponding data are discussed briefly. As an illustration of these ideas, the electrolytic domain boundaries of the solid electrolyte CSZ are given. A method for assessing the feasibility of various solid electrolyte applications is outlined. (Author)
