A MODEL STUDY OF THE LOAD-DISTRIBUTING CHARACTERISTICS OF TWIN, TWIN-TANDEM AND TWIN-TWIN GEAR CONFIGURATIONS FOR RIGID PAVEMENTS.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to establish through the combined use of small-scale models and theoretical analyses, relationships between maximum stresses induced in rigid pavements by single-wheel and multiple-wheel loads which could be used in the design and evaluation of rigid pavements for military airfields. The report presents the results of a series of laboratory model tests designed to simulate the action of rigid pavement slabs of various thicknesses loaded through the following four gear configurations: single wheel, twin wheels, twin-tandem wheels and twin-twin wheels.
