WORKSHOP ON TRAUMA, OCTOBER 10-12, 1968, WASHINGTON, D. C.

Abstract

One of the major purposes of the workshop was to stimulate much more interest in teaching and in research on trauma as it involves the musculoskeletal system, among orthopedic surgeons and others who are responsible for the victims' emergency and definitive care. After serious deliberation by the program planning committee, it was the consensus that the workshop should be restricted to several subjects most urgently in need of consideration by surgeons engaged in the treatment of musculoskeletal trauma, to pointing up areas of cooperation with other specialties, and to promoting research. The design of the environment in which accidents occur (the vehicle) must be improved, and this lent itself to a multidisciplinary approach involving orthopedic surgeons, pathologists, engineers, and transportation specialists. The problem of intravascular sludging and clotting in relation to immediate and late care of severely injured persons was chosen for consideration because of its importance in the recognition and treatment of severe trauma. This was to be a study of the interplay of basic scientists and clinicians, and was t serve as a useful model in the handling of similar problems in research and in the dissemination of information.
