FEASIBILITY STUDY AND PRELIMINARY DESIGN FOR A 100-Kw PERMANENT MAGNET GENERATOR.

Abstract

The feasibility of using recently developed permanent magnet materials for field excitation in a high speed generator was investigated and a preliminary design prepared. It was found that a design was feasible with only one of the permanent magnet materials - samarium cobalt (SmCo5). Analyses were performed in the areas of electromagnetic design, mechanical design, rotor dynamics and in the thermal aspects of the permanent magnet generator (PMG). Preliminary design sketches and layouts are presented. Four potential problem areas were identified, but it was concluded that the PMG is feasible and that there is a high probability of its successful development. (Author)
