DASA TRAILER SHOCK ISOLATION SYSTEM,

Abstract

The acquisition of experimental data from underground nuclear tests is dependent upon effective shock isolation of sensitive recording instruments housed in trailers that are exposed to the ground-shock environment. An efficient shock isolation system was developed for instrument trailers used on underground nuclear tests. Crushable aluminum honeycomb provides the principal shock isolation material for the system. This trailer shock isolation system has proven totally successful after use on 98 trailers fielded on eight different nuclear events. No known damage to instrumentation or data loss was attributed to ground shock of these trailers. System performance was verified by high-speed photography and accelerometer measurements of the ground and trailer motions during the Dorsal Fin and Milk Shake events. (Author)
