THE GROWTH OF THE NORTHERN ROSE-COLORED SHRIMP IN SKAGERRAK (Post Severnoi Rozovoi Krevetki v Prolive Skagerrak),

Abstract

The mean length of the carapace of northern rose-colored shrimps found on the south side of the South Norwegian Trench in Skagerrak was 14-16mm at the age of one year, 18-20mm at the age of two, 23-25mm at the age of 3, 28-29mm at the age of 4. The total length was as follows: 7.5-8.5cm at the age of one year, 9.5-10.5cm at the age of two, 12-13cm at the age of three, about 15cm at the age of four. The Skagerrak shrimps function as males during the second, less often during the third year of life, as females during the third, less often during the fourth year of life. The minimum life span of shrimps is four years. The shrimps that inhabit the southern side of the South Norwegian Trench grow at approximately the same rate as the shrimps that inhabit the water of South Norway, i.e., the growth rate lags behind that of the shrimps that inhabit Northumberland and British Columbia, which are in this respect ahead of the shrimps inhabiting the seas adjoining Norway, Greenland, Iceland, West Greenland, Eastern Canada, the Barents and Bering Seas.
