FORECAST OF THE MAXIMUM WOLF NUMBER FOR THE CURRENT ELEVEN-YEAR CYCLE,

Abstract

Long-term forecasts of solar activity may today be of interest not only to students of the geomagnetic field and the ionosphere, but also to meteorologists studying the relationship of tropospheric processes to solar activity. Existing methods of making these forecasts cannot yet be regarded as worked out adequately for practical purposes, particularly as regards the forecasting of the even-numbered 11-year cycles of the double (22-year) solar cycle. (The forecasting of the odd-numbered cycles is facilitated by the existence of fairly close relationships with the preceding even-numbered cycles.) Right now one is faced with these difficulties in forecasting the current 11-year cycle of solar activity, which is no. 20 according to the Zurich count. (Author)
