PHYSICS OF QUIESCENT PLASMAS.

Abstract

The report gives a review on experimental work on the Q-machine at The City University of New York and on its theoretical interpretation. First the basic principle of the Q-machine and a simple theoretical description is given, and a short recapitulation of probe theory is presented. Experiments on edge oscillations are described and a theory is given which identify them to be of Kelvin-Helmholtz type. In order to study phenomena occurring at weak magnetic fields the plasma cameras has been developed. By means of this new technique the formation of convective cells has been observed and has been also derived from a simple fluid model. At last some results on the work concerning the helical instability are discussed. (Author)
