AFGWC MACRO-SCALE BAROCLINIC PREDICTION MODEL.

Abstract

A six-level quasi-geostrophic prediction model has been in use at the Air Force Global Weather Central since 1965. The model produces forecasts of wind, pressure-height, vertical velocity, stream function and temperature for up to 72 hours. The installation of a larger computer system in 1968-1969 has allowed significant changes in the model. Improvements include a refined smoothing technique, use of higher order terms in the calculation of vorticity advection, and the inclusion of a new wind computational technique. (Author)
