1970 ANNUAL TECHNICAL SYMPOSIUM (7th). THE AN/BQS-13 RAPID INSTALLATION PLAN,

Abstract

The plan contains a disciplined approach to the installation of a major sonar system as developed by the AN/BQQ-2 Sonar Project Office in NAVSHIPS. The specific sonar system is the AN/BQS-13 which is installed in SSN637 Class Submarines commencing with the fiscal 1965 shipbuilding program. This concept is predicated on a total system approach to installation. It has been designated as the Rapid Installation Plan (RIP). This past installation history of sonar systems of this magnitude (i.e. 30 major cabinets or more) has been fraught with many serious problems. These problems have been evident in the areas of physical interferences, wiring errors, test procedure errors, installation system plan errors, and software inaccuracies in general. The result of utilizing this plan was a completely tested system, ready for sea, 7 weeks after shipyard receipt of the system. This system planning technique is applicable not only to sonar but to any major complicated shipboard system. Its success is based essentially on attention to minute detail in every phase of the program. (Author)
