INVENTORY CONTROL OF ARMY NON-COMBAT ESSENTIAL ITEMS.

Abstract

The report determined the reasons for, and methods of avoiding accumulation at individual Army locations of larger than required quantities of non-combat essential equipment and spare parts. S. E. Asia was the case study area. The recommendations have applications in other services. Analyses were made at Army activities in the US, Germny, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, Okinawa and Japan, and various Af, Navy, DSA, and GSA activities. Activities ranged from national inventory control points (NICP) down to the smallest field supply activities, and to combat units in Vietnam. The report contained recommendations under 4 general categories -- reducing workload, preventing the generation of new excesses, managing existing excesses, and improving supply training. The recommendations ranged from detailed mathematical inventory decision rules on order quantities, retention levels, and screening requisition quantities, to general procedural changes at excess redistribution agencies, depots, and national inventory control points.
