THE PROPER ROLE OF THE MILITARY IN CHINESE SOCIETY,

Abstract

The paper inquires into the role of the military in Chinese society as it has been seen by party and People's Liberation Army groups since 1927. From the beginnings of the PLA, there have been opposing and competing views about its role. The problem addressed here is that of identifying the competing groups in terms of shared concepts and goals, assessing their shaping influence in the army, and describing their patterns of action in terms of their effects on and relations with the rest of the Chinese policy.
