ANALYSIS OF UNBONDED CONTACT PROBLEMS THROUGH APPLICATION OF AN OPTIMIZATION TECHNIQUE,

Abstract

The report discusses a new approach to the solution of certain contact stress problems by utilizing optimization technique as an analytical tool. It is shown that an unbonded contact problem may be posed as an optimization problem, and that the contact stress distribution as well as the area of contact can be determined through a simple application of the linear programming technique. As an example, the problem of an infinite beam pressed against an infinite half plate by a concentrated force is analyzed. By means of this approach it would be possible to conduct an analytical investigation of a large class of unbonded contact problems arising from the structural systems of weapons and vehicles.
