PREPARATION OF N-SUBSTITUTED POLY(CYCLAMIDES).

Abstract

The preparation of partially N-substituted polyamides based on1,4- bis(aminomethyl)cyclohexane was investigated with the object of developing a more moisture-resistant nylon-epoxy structural adhesive. The usual method of methoxymethylation of the polymer with formaldehyde and methanol was found to be ineffective. A number of methods of preparing N,N'-dialkyl derivatives of cis- and trans-1, 4-bis(aminomethyl)cyclohexane were investigated; the cis-and trans-N, N'- dimethyl diamines were successfully prepared by alkylation of the corresponding Schiff's bases, followed by hydrolysis of the intermediate ammonium salts. The cis isomer was also prepared by alkylation of the cis- di(benzenesulfonamide), followed by hydrolysis. A number of polymers were prepared, several of which were found to be compatible with epoxy resin in cast films; these could be crosslinked by means of a latent catalyst and heat. (Author-PL)
