A RADIATION PROTECTION INTERLOCK SYSTEM FOR THE 8-MEV ICT TANDEM ACCELERATOR.

Abstract

A radiation protective system for a tandem accelerator utilizing interlocks, electric door locks and audio-visual warning devices is described. The system consists of four types of units. A master control panel (ACCELERATOR OPERATING CONDITION MONITOR) determines interlock and warning conditions by monitoring accelerator variables. An interlock control panel (INTERLOCK INDICATOR AND CONTROL PANEL) controls access to radiation areas. Warning lights and siren units (so called) present visual and audible indications of radiation conditions and abrupt changes in radiation conditions. Located at each door is a unit (ENTRANCE INTERLOCK INDICATOR UNIT) which is connected to a Micro-Switch and door lock. Responsibility for radiation safety is placed on the person operating the accelerator who is aware of the existing radiation conditions and has control of the access to radiation areas. Care has been taken in order to make the interlock system as 'Fail-safe' and reliable as possible. (Author)
