REACTION LAYERS ATTACHED TO SHOCKS.

Abstract

In experiments on the propagation of detonation fronts in gas columns one finds very regular undulations. The report explains the phenomenon by an interaction of shock branching with the combustion. The Mach stems trigger local intermittent reactions which cause again Mach stems. A self sustaining mechanism for Mach stems generation is put forward: The Mach stems trigger local, intermittent reactions which again cause Mach stems. This recurring process yields the propagation of the detonation front. The instant reactions are arranged in a surface with minimum distance which are controlled by diffusion and reaction time. The Chapman Jouguet theory therefore remains valid in the average. This concept is described in detail and substantiated on the basis of experiments arrived at with streak records, still photographs and with the soot method. The theory seems to give a satisfactory explanation of the experimental findings. (Author)
