BEAM FOIL EXCITATION STUDIES.

Abstract

Studies dealing with the effects of collisional excitation of ion beams by thin foils have been carried out for the purpose of providing a theoretical and analytical basis for an existing AFCRL experimental beam foil spectroscopy program. Primary emphasis has been placed upon the development of semi-empirical models applicable to the prediction of equilibrium charge-state distributions in collisionally excited ion beams. In general, such distributions are well described by Gaussian shapes in the case of relatively light ions (Z<10), significant deviations occurring with increasing ion atomic number and decreasing beam velocity.
