A CROSS-CULTURAL STUDY OF NORMATIVE BEHAVIOR AMONG JAPANESE AND AMERICAN BOYS IN THE 11-13 YEAR AGE RANGE.

Abstract

The report summarizes interview data obtained from 773 Japanese boys between the ages of eleven and thirteen. Using the same interview schedule employed in a survey conducted ten years earlier, the study probed such areas as organized and informal group associations, activities and interests, self-concepts, and views of the future. Some of the bases for conflict between the older and younger generations in Japan are suggested by the findings. The survey results not only indicate areas in which misperceptions of one another by Americans and Japanese might arise, but also provide a basis for the attainment of greater mutual understanding.
