COMPUTER-ASSISTED INSTRUCTION WORKSHOP AT THE NAVAL WAR COLLEGE.

Abstract

The objectives of the workshop were as follows: To review the state of the computer-assisted instruction art in terms of its application to the U. S. Navy, with special emphasis on the activities at Newport; To provide guided practice to a selected group of Naval officers on the Newport base who will develop short computer programs which could be of assistance in providing instruction at their various activities; To create at the Newport activities a staff group with some knowledge and competence in the control of advanced information systems for education and training, the staff group to be in a position to provide advice and assistance to the respective commands on requirements for future information systems and the application of these systems to officer education and management at the Newport Naval Base; To have the study group consider the potential of computer-based systems for research, especially research originated and conducted by members of the study group itself; To have the report (of the study group) generated at the conclusion of the study address itself to broader issues, e.g. plans and programs for the improvement of instruction and the implementation of man-augmenting computer techniques across the Navy as a whole.
