ELASTIC ELECTRON SCATTERING MEASUREMENTS OF THE NEUTRON CHARGE FORM FACTOR AT VERY LOW MOMENTUM TRANSFERS.

Abstract

Measurements of the ratio of the neutron-proton electric form factors, G(E sub n)/G(E sub p), were made from elastic electron-deuteron scattering to a precision of approximately 1 to 2% for the range of momentum transfers, q squared of 0.10 < or = q squared < or = 0.8 F sup (-2), and for electron scattering angles of 45 degrees to 120 degrees. It was found that within experimental errors the slope as determined from the ratio, G(E sub n)/G(E sub p), agrees with the thermal neutron-electron interaction slope when relativistic correstions and proper deuteron wave functions are applied to the electron-deuteron scattering results.
