HETEROGENEOUS NUCLEATION IN VAPOR DEPOSITION.

Abstract

A very brief review is given of studies in the following areas: Direct electron microscopy of zinc and/or cadmium nucleation on ceramic substrates and a theoretical investigation of the Hruska equation; electron microscopy of the nucleation of gold on mica substrates; computer simulation of nucleation and growth processes on crystal surfaces; evaluation of the replacement factor and the rotational partition function for a cluster in nucleation theory; delineation of the conditions for 'island' versus 'layer' nucleation on field emitter tips and the effect of sensitization of the tip for nucleation by prior deposition of inorganic salts and other trace impurities.
