DETERMINATION OF FREE SURFACE ENERGY OF FILAMENTS.
Abstract
Two new, but similar, methods are demonstrated for determining the free surface energy and the surface tension of polymeric filaments. These two surface characteristics are obtained from chart-recorded force-elongation curves. Under-curve-energy values and microcreep elongations are processed for the determination of free surface energy, while on-curve-force values and microstrain elongations are processed for the determination of surface tension. The polymer used is polystyrene of 45,000 molecular weight. Filaments formed by melt extrusion without drawing or thermal decomposition range in diameter from 0.01270 cm to 0.0528 cm. Rates of filament elongation: 0.00001 cm/min, .0001 cm/min, and 0.0508 cm/min. 9The actual values obtained for the numerically identical characteristics are: 308 ergs/sq cm for free surface energy and 313 dynes/cm for surface tension.
