RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE BREAKDOWN MECHANISM IN BARIUM TITANATE AND COLORATION,

Abstract

It is shown that the complex time dependence of electrical conductivity in barium titanate single crystals is due to two processes - f- and v-coloration. (The f-centers emanate from the cathode and the v-centers from the anode). The breakdown in barium titanate ceramic below 200 degrees centigrade and in single crystals below 350 degrees centigrade is not thermal. The loss of dielectric strength before breakdown is due to f-coloration, resulting from the injection of electrons from the cathode. (Author)
