AN ANALYSIS OF THE ROTATION AND ORIENTATION OF THE PROTON-2 SATELLITE,

Abstract

The Proton 2 satellite and a model of aerodynamic moments acting on it are considered. There is a considerable propelling effect at the expense of obliquely symmetrical solar cell panels. A theoretical analysis of the evolution of the Proton satellite's fast rotation under the effect of aerodynamic moments is given. Among the major effects are: long periodic variations of angular velocity of rotation and the character of rotation from spinning about the longitudinal axis to tumbling and again to spinning. The period of variations is a few tens of the satellite's orbits. Information on orientation transmitted from the satellite is considered. The qualitative character of motion is determined by analysis of information. The actual motion and the theory of motion coincide with each other. A method of information processing with a view to determining the satellite's orientation is described. Some results of information processing and of determining Proton 2's orientation are given. The obtained results are compared with the results of theoretical analysis. (Author)
