STUDIES OF INTERACTIONS OF LASER RADIATION WITH SOLIDS AND LIQUIDS.

Abstract

The report covers a project which has included the investigation of such effects as dielectric breakdown, impulse heating, and the generation of intense pressure pulses by focused pulsed ruby laser beams; stimulated Brillouin scattering of pulsed ruby laser light; and ordinary Brillouin scattering of low power continuous He-Ne laser light. During the final stages of the contract emphasis has been placed on effects observable by ordinary Brillouin scattering. This latter work is an outgrwoth of the emerging interest in the scattering of laser light by pure fluids and mixtures near critical points. (Author)
