TACTICAL AUTOMATIC DIGITAL SWITCHING SYSTEM,
Abstract
The paper reviews the development of the Tactical Automatic Digital Switching System (TADSS). It describes the procedures and techniques utilized to establish technical requirements and to define the demands of the military environment within which the system must operate and survive. The author discusses the set of performance categories and standard evaluation models which were established to enable the system to incorporate standard off-the-shelf commercial data handling devices. The measures taken to specially modify tactical equipment vans to provide environmental control and the high degree of mobility essential to rapid field deployment are treated in some detail. This is followed by a review of the test effort designed to assure that technical and environment requirements will be satisfied. (Author)
