TURBULENT HEATING IN PLASMAS.

Abstract

The results of a Lagrangian analysis of homogeneous plasma turbulence were used to justify the assumtion that trapped particle modes were instrumental in the turbulent heating of plasma, and a set of equations was derived which describes the behavior of individual waves of that type. In section 2 the usual probabilistic assumptions of homogeneous turbulence are applied to the basic equations of a Vlasov plasma. A simple mixing length approximation is used to achieve closure of the resulting set of equations. Section 3 contains some basic principles of Lagrangian plasma turbulence. In section 4 trapped particle modes are examined and the results of Bohm and Gross are extended so that the exact non-linear equations that govern them can be derived. (Author)
