EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF ANISOTROPY OF FIBERGLASS-REINFORCED PLASTICS,
Abstract
Results of experimental investigation of properties of a cold-cured fiberglass-reinforced laminate (21 layers per cm) consisting of an ASTT(b)-S sub 2 satin-woven fiberglass cloth and a PN-1 unsaturated polyester resin (50 to 50 ratio by weight) are presented. A regularity pattern in variation of mechanical properties of the laminate was studied in relation to the angle phi between the warp direction and longitudinal axis of the specimen. Tubular (30 mm i.d., 3 mm wall thickness) and flat 20 x 3 mm specimens were tested at phi equals 0 to 90 degrees in 15 degree intervals. The elasticity modulus, Poisson's ratio, ultimate strength, and elongation were measured and compared with theoretical values obtained by applying the relations of the elasticity theory of an orthotropic solid with three planes of elastic symmetry. The results obtained are plotted in diagrams and show that the flat specimens have lower values of all characteristics and give an incorrect idea on performance of structural components made of fiberglass-reinforced plastics within the whole construction. The use of tubular specimens instead of the flat ones is recommended in investigating the mechanical properties of fiberglass-reinforced plastics. (Author)
