THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MITRA AUTOCODE,

Abstract

A 2 year experience with the MITRA translation program for the MINSK computer indicated that the maximum permissible titles (128) are often insufficient and only part (approximately 3700 words) of the operational memory can be used for the storage of variables. These shortcomings were alleviated by fitting a magnetic-tape storage unit to increase the operational memory capacity. The new unit may be used for the storage of data and/or programs. For the storage of data, the autocode is supplemented by two function instructions that enable data to be fed into and read from the tape. For the storage of programs, the programs are divided into up to seven sections, each with 3200 machine-code instructions, permitting the use of programs of up to 22,000 instructions. Since each section may contain 128 titles, the maximum number of titles that may be used in a seven-section program is 896. Since the sectioned programs run for a longer time, programs should be divided into sections only if the ordinary capacity is insufficient, and each section should be as long as practicable,
