PRINCIPLES OF MATERIALS DESIGN FOR MULTICOMPONENT COMPOSITE SYSTEMS,

Abstract

The report is intended to make a first step in defining the principles of materials design for multicomponent composite systems. Specific illustrations are given in terms of ternary composite systems (Graphite/Boron/Epoxy, Boron/Glass/Epoxy and Graphite/Glass/Epoxy) however, the equations are formulated for n-component systems. It is clear that the subject is sufficiently complex as to ultimately require the use of computers for optimizing design and the basic algorithms for such computer programs are included in this document. It is also clear that designing with composites is not going to be revolutionized by materials people so that it is hoped that some designers will develop interest in following up the principles expressed in this document.
