LESSON WRITING FOR TEACHING VERBAL CHAINS: ORDER IN WHICH ELEMENTS ARE TAUGHT. PART III. ERRORS ON WORD ELEMENTS FOR THE SAME SUBJECT-MATTER TAUGHT BY SERIAL LEARNING AND BY TWO PROGRAMS USING FADING AS A TECHNIQUE,

Abstract

One important dimension for verbal learning programers to consider is that of the strength of the various response elements in the existing repertory of the learner. This strength may be estimated in a variety of ways and, although it is apparently dependent on context, it is, in the case of serial learning of verbal material, independent of the order in which elements are faded. This is true for two extremely divergent orders. The existence of response strength as a major factor suggests that one can accurately predict the errors which will be made on a trial by knowing the strength of the elements which are being learned in that trial.
