THE ANISOTROPIC EQUIVALENT OF THE LOVE LONGITUDINAL WAVE PROPAGATION APPROXIMATION.

Abstract

The anisotropic equivalent of the Love approximation for propagation of longitudinal waves in an isotropic, elastic bar has been derived. Its application including errors is discussed. It implies that the effect of cross-section geometry on dispersion is the same for isotropic and anisotropic bars. It suggests that a relationship termed the Pseudo-Poisson's ratio may be useful in classifying dispersion in anisotropic bars. Application to two composite material examples illustrates the drastic effect of fiber orientation on dispersion. (Author)
