STIMULATED RECALL OF IDIOSYNCRATIC AND CULTURAL FREE ASSOCIATES,

Abstract

The recalls from idiosyncratic (I) and cultural (C) sources of free associates are compared in order to determine if they are interchangeable information. Two hundred and seventy-five Ss were divided into three groups. Ss in Group I at first free associated to 5 stimulus words and then studied their idiosyncratic primary (List A) and secondary (List B) responses. Group C studied primary and secondary cultural associates to the same 5 stimuli, the items being provided by E. Group IC at first free associated, but then gave away their associates and studied a neighbor's lists of primaries and secondaries. All three groups were then asked to recall (in the presence of the stimuli) the secondaries previously studied in List B. There were substantial intrusions of S's own free associates in Group IC. Considerable interference from primaries resulted when S recalled the cultural material and considerable facilitation of secondaries resulted when S retrieved his idiosyncratic secondaries. (Author)
