A STUDY OF THE ELECTRIC DEFLECTION OF MOLECULAR BEAMS.

Abstract

An electric deflection molecular beam system with a mass spectrometric detector was built and tested and is operating satisfactorily. The entire system is bakeable to 400C in order to minimize interfering background gases, and can be operated at pressures approaching 10 to the -10th torr. Computer data reduction schemes for non-polar and linear molecules having both permanent and induced electric moments have been developed and tested and are in use. The system was applied to the study of alkali metals and their dimers and alkali metal halides and their polymers. Some experiments with supersonic nozzle beams were also carried out. (Author)
