IMPROVED ATCRBS ANTENNA INSTALLATION FOR FAA FLIGHT INSPECTION AIRCRAFT.

Abstract

The report describes the development of an improved ATCRBS Antenna System for FAA Flight Inspection aircraft by the use of 1/15-scale models and pattern techniques. DC-3, Convair 580, and SabreLiner T-39 aircraft were used in the test. Constant pattern coverage for 360 degrees in azimuth at the horizon and from 30 degrees above the horizon to 30 degrees below the horizon was desired. To obtain this type of coverage, two antennas strategically placed on each aircraft are required. Quarter wave stub antennas were used for investigating locations which would help the antenna produce nearly ideal radiation patterns. Principal plane patterns, yaw, pitch, and roll, are included for each location investigated on each aircraft. The outstanding locations were investigated with a directional model antenna having a very broad azimuth beamwidth. This characteristic of the antenna, coupled with the location radiation properties, produced nearly ideal pattern coverages. Principal plane patterns are included for each location investigated. An antenna with a broad pattern in azimuth was chosen to make the final sets of patterns. Principal plane patterns plus cone angle cuts to plus or minus 30 degrees above and below the horizon are included for each location.
