EXPLORATORY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM ON THE ROTATING COMBUSTION ENGINE USING THE RC1-90 TEST RIG.

Abstract

Tests were conducted to improve the performance of the fuel injected-stratified charge, spark ignited combustion process in the 90 cubic inch chamber size Rotating Combustion Engine. Three new configurations were designed, procured and tested, including two rotor housings having different fuel injector-igniter arrangements, and a rotor having a modified pocket shape. Each configuration provided a substantial performance improvement over previous configurations as demonstrated by reduced specific fuel consumption rates. Two of the configurations essentially met the power and SFC goals established for the contract. Continued development work is recommended to improve the light load operability and to establish the relative importance of various parameters on combustion performance. (Author)
