AN EVALUATION OF THE WAVE FLOW AROUND SHIP FORMS, WITH APPLICATION TO SECOND-ORDER WAVE RESISTANCE CALCULATIONS.

Abstract

The report establishes a procedure for calculation of first-order flow components, including the local wave field, for a class of shiplike bodies. A second-order correction flow is then defined by using an iteration procedure based on Green's formula. By the use of an 'inverse flow principle,' the second-order wave resistance due to the corrected flow is then expressed by means of a quadrature over products of first-order flow components only. The singular behavior of the first-order flow at bow, stern, and keel is accounted for by the selection of appropriate quadrature methods and by the retention of terms otherwise discarded. It is then found that these areas do not significantly influence integrated results. It is found necessary to evaluate flow components at the ship's hull rather than on the longitudinal centerplane, for consistency with the analysis that is developed. (Author)
