A SURVEY OF STUDIES ON THE CONFIGURATION OF CABLE SYSTEMS UNDER HYDRODYNAMIC LOADING.

Abstract

The development of cable system analysis methods is reviewed. Early investigations were limited to the two-dimensional steady-state analysis of round cables. More recent investigations have included steady-state and dynamic analyses of round and faired-section cables in one, two, and three dimensions. The three-dimensional dynamic equations for a general cable system are extended to include the rotation of the cable about its length as an additional degree of freedom. These equations include consideration of hydrodynamic 'added mass' effects and the elasticity of the cable. The hydrodynamic forces on a cable segment subjected to a relative flow and the modeling of these forces in various analyses are reviewed. These force models are compared to available test data.
