HIGH-ENERGY PULSED LIQUID LASER.
Abstract
The principal results of this reporting period are the achievement of the contract objective of 50 watts average power at a repetition rate of 5 pulses per second. Even more significant is that an average power output in excess of 100 watts was achieved at the same repetition rate. The material properties of the Nd+3:POC13:ZrCl4 liquid laser system, its laser properties and the various components of the circulatory liquid laser system which led to this achievement are briefly reviewed. The behavior and properties of the repetitively pulse liquid laser are described. (The contract objective of 50 watts average power at 5 pulses per second repetition rate was readily achieved, and an average power output in excess of 100 watts with the same repetition rate is reported) and, from the output data, the laser is shown to have the low dynamic loss value of 0.35 percent/cm. Some difficulties related to the uniqueness of this laser system were experienced. The first, which involved the shaft seal on the circulatory pump, was solved by the use of a mercury dam seal. The second, which occurred with operation of the power supply at high voltages and high repetition rates, appears to be solvable. (Author)
