HOST-VIRUS INTERACTIONS IN ABNORMAL CELLS.
Abstract
A biologically active substane(s) was concentrated from benthic marine algae by chemical and physical fractionation procedures. When added to the growth medium of mammalian tissue-cultured cells, it induces the phenomena designated amitosis, micronucleation, and multiple cytokinesis. A time-lapse movie has been produced which shows the formation of micronucleated cells and mini cells induced with algal extract. The development of vaccinia virus was followed in the genetically-deficient mini cells and results support recent biochemical evidence on the role of vaccinia in the 'uncoating' process. In related studies, factors associated with the formation of polykaryons and heterokaryons were considered. The system used mouse peritoneal macrophages, mouse hepatitis virus, and a human cell line.
