APPROXIMATION TO THE RADIATIVE TRANSPORT OF ENERGY IN AN OPTICALLY THICK LINE,

Abstract

The radiative transport of energy in an optically thick line is studied. First an asymptotic expansion for the radiative kernal is obtained for a Lorentz line shape. This result is used to calculate the radiative transport in some problems of interest in MHD gases. The limits of applicability of this asymptotic expansion are then determined by considering such effects as line overlap and statistical broadening. (Author)
